The Short Short Film Review - Forgive

Forgive (2008)

Families, they're supposed to be the rock upon which we stand, but sometimes it can feel like quicksand.

Even when we become adults our parents can still feel like giants. Like there's a part of the brain that still sees them through the eyes of the five year old that you once were. You may see their frailties, you may be taller, faster and stronger now, but they still have the ability to tower over you.

Forgive plays out a whole family history over two intertwined scenes in under fifteen minutes. An estranged father and son meet in Coventry train station and the Father's house, trying to come to terms with what has pulled them apart and created their family feud.

Written and directed by actress Manjinder Virk, the film is brave in its economy. Many short films try and pack in as much dialogue as they can, as if
embarrassed by their brevity. Forgive doesn't rush in, it shows faith in the understated performances of Sacha Dhawan and Abdi Gouhad and lets their story build. The camera work, editing (by Simon Thorne) and music are all clean and crisp, mirroring the economy of the words.

Forgive is a beautiful film, full of understanding about how families work and how they can never truly let go of each other.
